جوناثان سويفت (1667-1745) كاتب ساخر، من أسرة إنكليزية عريقة تلقى تعليمه في دبلت (عاصمة إيرلندة) وبدأ حياته العملية سكرتيراً للكاتب والسياسي الشهير السيد وليم تمبل. وقد لعب سويفت دوراً كبيراً في الحياة الأدبية والسياسية بلندن، في عهد الملكة آن (1702-1714). وقد اشتهر بأسلوبه التهكمي اللاذع وخاصة في كتاباته النثرية، كما اشتهر بنزعته الإنسانية.
ومن أشهر أعماله الأدبية "رحلات جلفر1726" التي نالت شعبية كبيرة في المائتين والخمسين السنة الأخيرة، في جميع أرجاء العالم، وتمتاز "رحلات جلفر" الأسطورية بواقعية قصصية تشد القارئ وتمتعه. فمغامرات جلفر بين الأقزام في "ليليبوت" لا يعادلها غرابة إلا مغامراته بين العمالقة في "بروند نجناح".
