وتؤدي اللغة دوراً هاماً وملموساً في الحياة الإنسانية، وذلك من منطلق كونها الوسيلة الرئيسية للتعارف والتعامل بين بني الإنسان، ولأن الإنسان الكائن إجتماعي لا يستطيع أن يحيا بمعزل عن أقرانه - إذ أن لا بد من أن يتصل بالآخرين سعياً نحو إشباع حاجاته ومواجهة متطلبات حياته - فإن موقع اللغة في هذه العملية الواقعية الطبيعية يأتي في المقام الأول، وذلك بالنظر إلى الدور الجوهري للغة في تيسير الإتصال المتبادل بين الأفراد وتحقيق غاياتهم المنشودة.
وتُعدّ مرحلة الطفولة المبكرة أسرع مراحل النمو اللغوي تحصيلاً وتعبيراً وفهماً، فيتجه التعبير اللغوي للطفل نحو الوضوح والدقة والفهم، كما يتحسن النطق ويختفي الكلام الطفلي وتزداد قدرته على فهم كلام الآخرين كما يستطيع الإفصاح عن حاجاته وخبراته.
وفترة الطولة من وجهة النظر التربوية والسيكولوجية من أهم الفترات في حياة الإنسان حيث يتعلم الطفل فيها الكلام والقراءة والكتابة ويتكيف مع المجتمع الذي وجد نفسه فيه.
