منذ أن خلق الإنسان وهو في محاولات مستمرة ومتصلة لتفهم ما يدور حوله من ظواهر وأحداث، ولإكتشاف العوامل والقوى التي تؤثر في هذه الظواهر والأحداث، وإذا كان هذا العصر هو عصر الذرة والصواريخ والأقمار الصناعية وغزو الفضاء، فهو أيضاً عصر علم النفس، فلا شك أن موضوع علم النفس من أهم الموضوعات التي تهم جميع البشر، بل أصبحت دراسة علم النفس من الموضوعات المهمة لكل إنسان مهما اختلفت طبيعة عمله، حيث امتدت هذه الأهمية إلى كل ما من يهمه أمر توجيه وتدريب وإعداد الفرد تربوياً وإجتماعياً ونفسياً وفي كل المجالات.
ويحتل علم النفس موقع الصدارة بين العلوم الإنسانية في القرن الحالي نظراً لأهمية هذا العلم الذي يهدف إلى دراسة الهندسة البشرية من أجل توفير الحياة السعيدة للأفراد والجماعات، وقد اتسعت ميادين علم النفس وعمت تطبيقاته جميع نواحي الحياة حتى أصبح من الضروري لكل فرد في أسرته أو كل عامل في موقعه أن يلم بمبادئ أو أصول هذا العلم الحديث.
ومن المعروف أن جميع الأمم والشعوب على إختلاف مستوياتها الثقافية والعلمية تؤكد على ضرورة العناية بالثروة البشرية الحالية والصاعدة.
إن المجتمعات الحديثة تمر بتغيرات سريعة متلاحقة يؤدي عدم إستيعابها إلى الإحساس بالضغوط التي تؤدي إلى التوتر والقلق والإحتراق النفسي ويختل التوازن النفسي للفرد بشكل خاص وعدم النجاح في الحياة بشكل عام.
إن فهم السلوك الإنساني ضروري لقيام علاقات إجتماعية سليمة، فكل إنسان له ذاتيته الخاصة وفرديته المتميزة، وسلوكه مرتبط لكل الإرتباط بتكوينه النفسي، ولا يكفي أن يفهم الشخص نفسه لكي يكون قادراً على تكوين علاقات إجتماعية سوية مع غيره، وإنما عليه أن يفهم غيره بقدر ما يفهم نفسه، وعلى أساس هذا لفهم يتحدد مدى نجاحه أو فشله في هذه الحياة.
وهذا الكتاب ليس إلا محاولة متواضعة لفهم السلوك الإنساني وتفسيره، وذلك من أجل تحقيق التوازن النفسي والنجاح في الحياة، ولما كان السلوك الإنسان معقداً ومتنوعاً إلى درجة لا يمكن الإلمام به في مجلد أو بضعة مجلدات، قد آثرنا أن ننظر إليه نظرة إجمالية، محاولين قدر الإمكان فهم وتفسير السلوك الإنساني في ضوء آخر ما توصلت إليه البحوث والدراسات، وتجنب العرض التقليدي لموضوعات علم النفس.
والواقع إن علم النفس يسهم في حل جميع المشكلات التي تجابهنا في مراحل حياتنا المعاصرة سواء كانت مشكلات تربوية أم مهنية أم إجتماعية أم نفسية.
