يتناول هذا الكتاب موضوعين رئيسين مهمين وهما شعر الاحزاب السياسية، وشعر النقائض، حيث كان الموضوع الاول يثير حزازات طائفية، والثاني انتقاص للفكر القومي ((لان شعر النقائض شعر هجاء وثلب)). حيث ان شعر الاحزاب السياسية في العصر الاموي كان يمثل حيوية الامة، ونضج فكرها واتساع افقها الذي نشط، فواكب احداث العصر، وناقش قضاياه بعاطفة صادقة وعقل يدفع الحجة بالحجة. وكان يمثل ايضا تراث الامة ونشاطها الفكري والادبي في عصر من اكثر العصور العربية كثرة انتاج، وتنوع افكار. اما حذف شعر النقائض من الكتاب فخلخل بين، وحجة حذفه مردودة، لان الشاعر ان كان يسلب من يهجوه كل معاني الخير، ويسطر فيه معاني الثلب والهجاء الساخر، فانه في الوقت نفسه يرسخ القيم العليا التي يرتايها المجتمع، ويرتضيها في النموذج الطيب، ويرسخ الاخلاق المثلى التي يسلبها من مهجويه، ويضيفها على نفسه.
