يصعب اعتبار الكتاب الحالي طبعة موسعة لكتاب المؤلف السابق الذي صدر عن جامعة دمشق قبل عشر سنوات بعنوان: "الأدب المقارن" في جزأين الأول في النظرية والمنهج، والثاني في التطبيق، كما يصعب الزعم بأن الكتاب الحالي ليس سليل الكتاب الأول. فبينهما فصول مشتركة، وإن تكن غير متطابقة المادة، مثل معضلة الأدب المقارن، وتاريخه العالمي وبعض تاريخه العربي.
وقد تم استغناء المؤلف عن الجزء الثاني للكتاب بكامله، ربما انسجاماً مع قناعة تولدت لديه مع طول الممارسة بأن تطورات الأدب المقارن أصبحت تتقبل إمكان الفصل بين التنظير والتطبيق، أو بالأحرى التركيز على شق منهما دون الآخر في التجربة التأليفية الواحدة. ومما يؤكد صلة القرابة بين الكتابين أن قناعات المؤلف فيما يتعلق برسالة الأدب المقارن وأهميته ومستقبله لم تتغير من الناحية النوعية طوال السنوات العشرة الماضية، التي نال فيها الأدب المقارن من اهتمامه التأليفي (التنظيمي أيضاً) ما طغى على الاهتمامات الأدبية الأخرى العديدة التي تؤرق المثقف الأدبي في هذا العصر وتتناهب طاقاته.
ويعترف المؤلف بأن الأدب المقارن بدأ يأخذ عنده صيغة قضية عمر رفيعة وليس مجرد تخصص أكاديمي ومهنة دنيوية يومية، ومما عالجه المؤلف في هذا الكتاب نذكر: معضلة الأدب المقارن، ربما في آخر تطوراتها، كما يحاول أن يصل بين الأدب العربي المقارن والتجربة العالمية، ومن ثم قدم عرضاً للتجربة المعرفية التي يباشرها المقارنون العرب منذ منتصف الثلاثينات، كما وعمل على نبش وقائع أساسية في نشأة الأدب العربي المقارن، وتصحيح تاريخه النظري والتطبيقي، وأخيراً حاول أن يحلل المحاولات المستمرة للمقارنين العرب في سعيها للتواصل إلى موقف وسطي ذي فاعلية من شأنه توطيد الرسالة المعرفية والإنسانية للأدب المقارن.
