تشكل الحياة السياسية السورية نموذجاً شديد الخصوصية لما نسميه "تحت السياسة" وهو مصطلح يحيل السياسة من الشريط المتحرك لأحداثها إلى "منحوتات" بارزة في المشهد العام لهذه الأحداث وبمقدار ما تشكل هذه "المنحوتات" جزءاً بنيوياً في هذا المشهد، فإنها في الوقت تشي بنزعة استقلالية عن متحولاته. ها هنا تبدو السياسة قصية عن "المفاجأة" التي قد تكون من مألوفات المشهد السياسي، وأحياناً السبب الوحيد لإعادة إنتاج الحركة فيه، كلما وصل إلى حالة من الستاتيكو كما تبدو هذه السياسة قابلة للقراءة المستقبلية وفق "النموذج" الذي يضجّ المشهد بـ "منحوتاته".
يشكل هذا الكتاب، محاولة في قراءة معطى "منحوتات" الفعل السياسي السوري، وذلك في توضعها على جدار الحياة السياسية، في مناسبات متعددة.
