قرأ قسماً كبيراً من نتاجه، وأعمل فيه ذائقته وحسّه، حتى تمكّن من إختيار أجمل وأروع ما كتبه مارون عبود في مرحلة زاهية من مراحل نهضتنا الأدبية والفكرية في القرن التاسع عشر الميلادي والتي ما تزال تُقرأ إلى الآن.
قدم المؤلف لعمله بنبذة عن حياة مارون عبود ونشأته وعمله في الصحافة اللبنانية وفي مهنة التدريس، وتسلمه لمراكز حيوية في مدير متن جبيل وجبيل العليا وتعيينه رئيساً لبلدية غرزوز وتوابعها (1915م) وغيرها من مهام، فضلاً عن إسهاماته في الحياة العامة اللبنانية وإصداره لأعماله الأدبية الرائدة...
وبناءً عليه، يضم الكتاب (أقوال - أشعار - قصص - مقالات) جاءت في الكتاب مرتبة بعناوين رئيسية توزعت على أربعة أقسام.
من عوالم الكتاب اخترنا مقالاً بعنوان "مذهبي في الحياة" نقرأ منه: "مذهبي في الحياة أن لا مذهب لي فيها، فكل أعمالي خبص في خبص، ما أريده لا أفعله، والشيء الذي لا أريده، إياه أصنع، في مذهبي أن الدماغ البشري هو المستودع النائمة فيه، إلى حين، أسرار الطبيعة، أراني أؤمن بالحياة إيماناً عميقاً لا قرار له، وأحبها محبة كلية ولكنها بدون رجاء، إني أرى الأرض مصدر كل خير وبركة، ومع ذلك يكفر بها الناس، ينكرون فضلها عليهم، ويفتشون عن سعادتهم في غيرها، أكره القمر ولا أفرح بولادته لأنه يشير زوال، وأنا لا أريد أن أزول قريباً، وأحب الشمس لأنها رمز الديمومة…".
