يعد أفلاطون ( 427 ق.م. - 347 ق.م. ) أول فيلسوف عرفه العالم. وتُعد فلسفته المثالية الفلسفة التي أثرت في الفكر البشري ، وما تزال تؤثر حتى اليوم ، لأنه هو من وضع الأسس العامة للفلسفة المثالية السماوية ... ثم جاءت فلسفة أرسطو ( 384 ق.م. - 322 ق.م. ) المادية الأرضية ، التي خالف فيها فلسفة أستاذه أفلاطون ، لكنه لم يستطع نقضها ، ولا إلغاءها ، وظلت الفلسفتان إلى اليوم المصدر الأول لكل الفلسفات التالية لهما ...
ويجيء هذا الكتاب والذي هو من إعداد الأستاذ فادي وديع عبود ؛ ليعرف بأفلاطون ، ويقدم عرضاً شاملاً لعصره وحياته وفلسفته ، كما يقدم الكتاب تعريفاً موسعاً بأستاذه سقراط . وكان أفلاطون التلميذ الذي خلّد أستاذه ، وروى سيرة حياته ، وحفظ افكاره . وكان سقراط الرجل الأول في محاورات افلاطون ، ولعل أفضل ما صنعه أفلاطون هو تصويره بطولة سقراط ووصفه لاحتسائه السم برباطة جأش ، ليجعل من سقراط اسطورة ، ورمزاً للكبرياء .
وفي هذا الإطار جرى التطرق إلى فلسفة أفلاطون ، وعرض أبرز أفكاره في الحياة والموت والأخلاق والحكم والعدل والإنسان ، ثم جرى تعريف شامل بمحاورته الشهيرة ( الجمهورية ) ، وتم عرض أبرز أفكاره فيها ، ومناقشة قيمتها التاريخية والفلسفية ، وبيان آراء النقاد فيها ...
وأخيراً تم التعريف بتلميذ أفلاطون ، ( أرسطو ) ، وعرض سيرة حياته ، وصلته باستاذه ، وبسط أبرز أفكاره الفلسفية ، ثم جمع وعرض أهم حكمه وأقواله مأخوذة من محاوراته وموزعة ألفبائياً حسب الموضوع .
