إن عملية أسر وتدجين الجمل ووضعه تحت سيطرة الإنسان حدثت فيما بين عام 3000 و 2500 ق م وذلك في جنوب بلاد العرب في منطقة حضر موت الوسطى (المهرة) وظفار حيث كانت الحيوانات البرية تصطاد لأجل لحمها في أماكن الشرب أو أن تغرى بواسطة الطعام أو الإشراك.
ومن المؤكد بما لا يقبل الجدل، أن الحافز الأول للتدجين كان الإنتاج الحليب فقط، وقد أثبتت تلك الحقيقة عن طريق نماذج إستخدام ذلك الحيوان بين البدو الذين يهتمون بزيادة منتوجات الحليب لديهم فلذلك يقتلون الذكور من الجمال لدى ولادتها.
ولقد كان إستخدام الجمل كحيوان لحمل الأثقال قد حدث بعد ذلك بقليل عندما اضطر مربو القطيع للتفتيش على مراعي جديدة ولهذا انتقلوا ومعهم جميع مقتنياتهم وحيواناتهم ولقد كان إكتشاف قدرة هذا الحيوان على حمل الأثقال وشدة تحمله أظهرت أنها ذات نتائج باهرة بالنسبة للنتائج التاريخية.
إن مجيء الجمل قد وسع مجال المحاولات البشرية وأثر على الحياة الإقتصادية للمجتمع بأجمعه فقد وفر الجمل للإنسان حرية الحركة التي لم يكن يعرفها من قبل ووضع متناول يده الوصول إلى أقصى أماكن المراعي.
وبين يدينا موسوعة الإبل، أعدّها الدكتور "منير عبد الرحيم" حيث تناول فيها الحديث عن عائلة الإبل ومواصفاتها وملامحها وأعدادها وموطنها وتشريحها العلمي ثم تحدث عن أهمية الإبل في العالم العربي حيث يقدّر عدد الإبل في الوطن العربي حوالي 11 مليون رأس من الإبل ذات السنام الواحد التي تعرف بالإبل العربية من أصل أكثر من 18 مليون رأس تعداد الإبل في العالم.
ويعيش البدو في الصحارى على شكل مجموعات يتاجرون ويرتحلون عبرها بواسطة الإبل التي تعتبر المصدر الأساس لحياتهم ووسيلتهم في الركوب والترحال، وعليه، جاءت هذه الموسوعة العلمية الثقافية، الفنية يقدمها المؤلف للقارئ المهتم، ولإغناء المكتبة العربية بشكل خاص.
