وعلم الإجتماع كغيره من العلوم يجهد بالبينة لتقديم إجابات تتعلق بمواقف الحياة اليومية، العادات والتقاليد ومختلف التصرفات الإنسانية من أبسطها حدوثاً حتى أكثرها تعقيداً. كأن يبحث في الجرائم المنظمة، الإغتيالات السياسية، آثار الحروب، الصراع العرقي، التفاوت الطبقي، إنتشار الأمية والفقر ... وهو في سعيه لدراسة هذه الظواهر يقدم معطيات علمية قائمة حول ما حدث، ولماذا حدث وما سيترتب عنها من تداعيات.
يعتبر الدكتور مأمون طربيه أن علم الإجتماع يقوم في الأساس على البحث الإجتماعي أي استخدام الأسلوب العلمي في دراسة الظواهر والوقائع الإجتماعية وتعديل الأفكار الخاطئة الرائجة وتشخيص المشاكل الإجتماعية والوقاية منها بعد رسم الخطط واقتراح الحلول. فهو العلم من أجل العلم إذ يمكنه "الإسهام بأكثر من وسيلة في النقد الإجتماعي وفي الإصلاح الإجتماعي العملي، إتاحة الفهم المتطور لمجموعة من الظروف الإجتماعية مما يسهم في إيجاد فرص أفضل للسيطرة عليها وتوجيهها ويوفر لنا الوسائل الكفيلة لشحذ حساسياتنا الثقافية، وإدراك التنوع في القيم الثقافية، ومن الناحية العملية بوسعنا أن نتقصى عبره النتائج المترتبة لضرورة إنتهاج برامج عمل وسياسات إنمائية".
ما يميز هذا الكتاب عن غيره من الإصدارات الأكاديمية أنه يعالج الظاهرة الإجتماعية من وجهة نظر حقول معرفية ثلاث هي: علم الإجتماع والخدمة الإجتماعية وعلم النفس الإجتماعي. بالإضافة إلى الإستشهاد بكثير من نتائج الأبحاث والدراسات والمعطيات الإحصائية التي تفيد الطالب المتخصص والعاملون في حقل العلوم الإجتماعية من باحثين وأساتذة، هذا ما عدا سلاسة الأسلوب وبساطة التعبير في تعريف المفاهيم التي تمكن غير المتخصصين من حقول أخرى الإنتفاع بها.
