بعض الناس يظنون أن هناك طريقتين فقط لتربية الأطفال، الأولى بضغط ملتزم وعقاب حازم للحصول على مواطن صالح. والثانية بالتسامح والعفو للحصول على المواطن نفسه. إنني مقتنع أن الطريقتين مخفقتان. لأن الأطفال ينمون بتصرف لائق وبحسّ للمسؤولة إذا ما شعروا بالحب تجاه أهلهم الذين يحبونهم بدورهم. وعلى الأهل أني عرفوا ماذا يريدون من أبنائهم وأن يتعاملوا معهم بوضوح. ولكن هذا يتطلب عملاً مضنياً من الأهل في المراقبة، والشرح، والتوجيه، والتذكير، والتشجيع، والمعارضة، والردع، وإجمالا جدية بوجود العقاب أو بغيابه.
الصعوبات في تربية الأطفال اليوم هي أكبر من أي يوم آخر، هكذا أشعر، لعل مرد ذلك إلى أن التقاليد تغيرت بسرعة غير متوقعة. الشبان أنفسهم بدأوا يتساءلون عن إيماننا في تطور الفرد في نظامنا المبني على التنافس ويتساءلون أيضاً عما إذا كنا نحصل على حياة أفضل لو أننا عشنا ببساطة عوضاً عن هذا التعقيد. إن نعيش باخوة وحب بدلاً من العداء.
ما يسأل عنه الأهل عادة هو مناقشة أوضاع خاصة ومشكلات معينة، هذه الأسئلة لها تأثيرها على تربية الطفل لذلك سأناقشها على صفحات هذا الكتاب بوضوح وصراحة.
