كان ابن عربي متعطشاً للعلم والمعرفة والبحث، فقد بدأ مسيرة الترحال منذ سني شبابه الأولى في المغرب الإسلامي، لا يستقر على حال قط، حتى دعاه داعي الرحيل إلى المشرق الإسلامي فيمّم وجهه شطر البيت الحرام، مروراً ببيت المقدس، لم يمكث طويلاً بل واصل مسيره من مدينة إلى أخرى، حتى انتهى به الأمر في دمشق بعد أن بلغ من العمر الستين.
وهناك وجد من العطف والترحاب والإحترام من قبل كل فئات المجتمع بما فيهم العلماء والقضاة، وكانت علاقة الملك المظفر غازي بن أبي بكر (ت 645هـ) به علاقة المريد بالشيخ.
وفي دمشق كتب الفصوص وأكمل كتابة الفتوحات المكية، والحقيقة أن المتتبع لمسيرة هذا الرجل وأفكاره ربما عده من الشخصيات القلقة المثيرة والمحيّرة، فلا شك أن لحياته الحافلة بالأحداث أكثر من علامة وإشارة، كما كانت لعباراته أكثر من دلالة ورمز ومعنى.
... ولعل إختلاف الدارسين قديماً وحديثاً حول فكره كانت نتيجة قابلية نصوصه لتعدد القراءات، حتى تراوحت المواقف تجاهه بين المدح والذم؛ بين من وعده وليّاً وقطباً وغوثاً وإنساناً كاملاً ووارثاً للنبوة، ومن اعتبره باطنياً وكافراً وزنديقاً...
