تعبر فلسفة سنتيانا خير تعبير عن الأمة التي عاناها الفكر الأمريكي والغربي في القرن العشرين. وهو فيلسوف يتميز بسعة اطلاعه وتنوع مصادر ثقافته. وقد كان معاصراً للكثير من الفلاسفة العظام الذين تركوا بصمات واضحة على تاريخ الفكر الفلسفي، فقد عاصر ظهور المنهج البراجماتي على يد وليم جيمس وبيرس، وجون ديوي، كما شهد ظهور الفلسفات التحليلية والوضعية وفلسفات الوجود والفينزفيولوجيا.
تميز سنتيانا بنقده العميق للنزعة الطبيعية وقد بدأ واضحاً اهتمامه ببيان العلاقة بين المفاهيم العامة للواقع وبين الصدق والخير ومدى تأثيرها على المجتمع. وقد دعا في فلسفته للناس جميعاً إلى التحرر من وهم سيطرة الأفكار القديمة. والكتاب يقع في عشر فصول، عرض المؤلف في الفصل الأول حياة الفيلسوف ونشأته ومراحل تعليمه، كما عرض في الفصل الثاني لأهم آرائه بالجمال والفن ومبعث اهتمامه بالماهية. أما الفصل الثالث فهو بحث في فلسفة سنتيانا في الوجود.
في حين عرض الفصل الرابع لـ "عالم المادة" وهي المقولة الأولى من مقولات الوجود لسنتيانا كما عرض لمجال عمل المادة وهو الفعل ودار الفصل الخامس حول "عالم الماهية" وهي المقولة الثانية من مقولات الوجود، لسنتيانيه كما يتناول بالشرح نظرية سنتيانا في الماهية ومدى أهميتها في فلسفته. ويتناول الفصل السادس المقولة الثالثة في منظومة مقولات الوجود عنده وهي "عالم الروح" كما يبحث الفصل السابع في الشك لدى الفيلسوف وسبب استخدامه له. وفي حين يشكل "عالم الصدق" موضوع الفصل الثامن وهو أحد مقولات الوجود التي وضعها بين مقولاته السابقة المادة والماهية والروح، فإن الفصل التاسع يبحث في "نظرية المعرفة" فيعرض بشيء من التفصيل لمذهبي الواقعية الجديدة والواقعية النقدية كما يعرض للبراهين الثلاثة التي قدمها سنتيانا لدعم المذهب الواقعي النقدي وهي: البرهان البيولوجي، البرهان السيكولوجي، والبرهان المنطقي. أما في الفصل العاشر فقد عقد المؤلف دراسة لبيان مكانة جورج سنتيانا في الفكر الفلسفي مع عرض لأهم نتائج البحث.
