إن فلسفة التأويل التاريخ والتي تعد من وجهة نظر الباحث ثورة حقيقية على كل الموروث الفلسفي وخاصة في القرن العشرين، الذي طغت فيه النزعة الوضعية، وعلت فيه الدعوات المنادية بتطبيق المناهج العلمية الطبيعية على العلوم الإنسانية؛ كما ظهرت مدارس وفلسفات ترى في العودة للتاريخ معطلاً لمسيرة التطور البشري، جاءت فلسفة التأويل التاريخي عند كولنجوود لتنفض الغبار الوضعي عن التاريخ، مظهرة ألق العلوم الإنسانية وتميز مناهجها عن العلوم الطبيعية وذلك لإختلاف مجال كل منها عن الآخر.
وتتلخص أهم ركائز التأويلية التاريخية في جمع بين شرطين أساسيين هما: الإتصال بالواقع مع مراعاة تاريخية أي أشكال يراد بحثه؛ والتجربة الخاصة للمؤول، كما ويعتمد منهجه الفلسفي على إفتراض فرض ثم التحقق منه بالرجوع إلى التجربة التاريخية، ثم إستخلاص النتائج التي يقود إليها الفرض، ثم التصديق على النتائج بالرجوع إلى وقائع التاريخ، وعليه فالمراجعة المستمرة تنعكس على تأويليته والتي هي عملية مستمرة وفي نفس الوقت عملية نقدية.
كما اعتمد كولنجوود تحديدات رئيسة انعكست على تأويليته التاريخية وهي: تعريفه للفكر كأساس للتاريخ "كل تاريخ هو تاريخ فكر"، وتوجيهه للوعي نحو التاريخ ككاشف عنه، وإعتماده التمثل التاريخي بديلاً تأويلياً عن التقمص الوجداني الرومانسي، ودمجه بين الوظيفة المعنية بالمؤرخ وتجاوزها بالوظيفة الفلسفية التأويلية؛ بمعنى جمعه عبر هذه النظرية بين المهمة التاريخية لإعادة البناء، والمهمة الهيرومنيوطيقية للفهم.
