تلقى تعليمه الابتدائي بمدينة بنزرت، وواصل دراسته الثانوية في تونس العاصمة، وحصل من جامع الزيتونة على شهادة التحصيل عام 1952. عمل بسلك التعليم، وعمل مديرًا لدار الثقافة ببنزرت عام 1968، ثم عمل ملحقًا بوزارة الثقافة في عام 1969. عُين رئيسًا لمصلحة النشر بالشركة التونسية للتوزيع عام 1971. عُين كسكرتير تحرير مجلة الفكر لمدة 6 سنوات من 1972 وحتى 1978. عمل مديرًا للنشر بمؤسسة عبد الكريم بن عبد الله، ثم انتقل إلى المنظمة العربية للتربية والثقافة والعلوم (الألكسو) لمدة سنتين، وأنشأ مكتب المنشورات الجامعية. يدير الآن عددا من السلاسل بإحدى دور النشر. شغل منصب رئيس اتحاد الناشرين التونسيين، وأحد مؤسسي نادي القصة بتونس. يكتب القصة القصيرة، والرواية، وقصص الأطفال، ويهتم بالنقد والمقال، ونشر إنتاجه في الصحف والمجلات التونسية والعربية.

"تغريبة أحمد الحجري" رواية يرسم مؤلفها سيرة ذاتية للبطل المتغرب الذي يتحول إلى مواطن عالمي، بعد أن ضاق ذرعاً بكل ما أفرزته حذاقة منظري السياسة ومفكريها، فأخيراً قدر فرانشيسكو العالمي ساكن الأرض على ما عجز عنه غيره، وبسهولة تحرر من ربقة كل الأوطان، فلا هو إسباني ولا أندلسي ولا حتى ماذياني، فهو قد استبدل مرارة المنفى بكبرياء الشمول وبوسع العالم كله، فكتب صفته بلغة إسبانية: العالمي ساكن الأرض فالفرق كبير بين أن ينتمي المرء إلى وطن أو قوم وبين أن ينتمي إلى العالم الأرض.
فالعالم قد اضطرب مراراً تحت وطأة الصراعات بين البشر، والبطل يتذكر حروب قرطاجة وحجافل شعبها تغزو ثم تغزى ويتذكر جيوش المسلمين يرسي بصقلية فيرسي النرمان بدورهم في المهدية. وتستمر نفس الأمواج مهتزة تحت مراكب القراصنة، مسلمين ونصارى بين طارد ومطارد في سباق متواصل لا يهدأ.
