يقدم هذا الكتاب المعلومات الاساسية عن الاعاقة السمعية من حيث تعريفها واسبابها وتصنيفاتها وتاثيراتها على مظاهر النمو المختلفة وابعادها التربوية والتاهيلية والاسرية، وعلى وجه التحديد، ينصب الاهتمام في الكتاب على الاشخاص الصم الذين ليس باستطاعتهم معالجة اللغة عبر حاسة السمع لان الاعاقة التي يعانون منها شديدة جدا الامر الذي يجعلهم عرضة لمواجهة صعوبات جمة في استخدام نظام تواصل فاعل مع الاشخاص الاخرين. ولا تقتصر تاثيرات الاعاقة السمعية على الشخص نفسه ولكنها تمتد لتطال الوالدين والاسرة باكملها. مما يجعل الصورة بالغة التعقيد وهو ان الوالدين قد لا يعرفان الا القليل عن الصمم او عن كيفية التعامل بطريقة بناءة مع الابناء الصم، ليس ذلك فحسب، بل ان عليهما ان يبذلا جهودا كبيرة للتخلص من المعتقدات الخاطئة التي ربما تكون قد تطورت لديهما عن الصمم ومضامينه. فتلك المعتقدات والتي تشكل في ظل غياب المعلومات كثيرا ما تنطوي على افكار غير واقعية واتجاهات سلبية نحو الاشخاص الصم. ومع ان بعض المشكلات التي يواجهها الافراد المعوقون سمعيا ترتبط بالاعاقة الا ان العديد من المشكلات لا يرتبط بالاعاقة ذاتها بقدر ما يرتبط بنظرة الناس الى الاشخلص المعوقين سمعيا وتوقعاتهم منهم واتجاهاتهم نحوهم، وللاسف، فان نظرة الكثيرين في المجتمع الى الاعاقة قد تمثل عوائق اضافية تحول دون تمكن الشخص المعوق من التكيف ودون قيامه بدوره في المجتمع الى الحد الاقصى الممكن .
