وضع العلماء المحدثون قواعد وأصولاً لمعرفة ما صح من الأحاديث النبوية وما ضعف، وقد قسم العلماء تلك القواعد إلى أنواع عدة، ومن جملة تلك الأنواع معرفة الحديث العالي في الإسناد وقد ألف العلامة "الشيخ صلاح الدين أبو سعيد خليل بن كيكلدي العلائي" هذا الكتاب -بغية الملتمس في سباعيات حديث الإمام مالك بن أنس- في نوع من أنواع العلو، وهو علو الإسناد إلى الإمام مالك، وهو كتاب فريد في بابه حيث تكلم فيه المؤلف عن الإسناد وأهميته، وعن اختصاص الأمة الإسلامية. كما تكلم عن شرف أصحاب الحديث ووصيته صلى الله عليه وسلم بهم، ثم تكلم عن علو الإسناد وقسمه إلى خمسة أقسام، مترجماً ترجمة حسنة للإمام مالك، ذاكراً انه أول من وضع كتاباً من حديث النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم، على الأبواب ثم ذكر من وقع له حديث الإمام مالك من طرقهم، ثم روى ثلاثين حديثا بالإسناد المتصل إلى الإمام مالك مما رواه متصل السماع فيها بينه وبين الإمام مالك سبعة رجال، ثم روى خمسة وعشرين حديثاً مما بينه وبين الإمام مالك، أيضاً فيه سبعة رجال لكن في أسانيدها إجازة.
ثم ذكر في آخر الكتاب خاتمة هامة في درجات أهل الحديث وختمها بما أنشده لنفسه الشيخ تقي الدين أبو محمد، عبد الله بن تمام الحنبلي الصالحي في مدح أهل الحديث هذا وقد ذيل الكتاب بتحقيق لطيف، هدفه تخريج الأحاديث وتحقيق النص، بيان موضع الحديث في الموطأ والكتب الستة وبيان بعض الأوهام التي وقع فيها المؤلف في تخريج بعض الأحاديث أو ترجمة بعض الرجال.
