إن خدمة السنة النبوية من أشرف ما يخدم به المرء دينه, وخاصة في هذا الزمن الذي قل فيه روادها وطلابها, وقد وضع العلماء المحدثون قواعد وأصولا لمعرفة ما صح منها وما ضعف, وقد قسم العلماء تلك القواعد إلى ما شاء الله من أنواع, ومن جملة تلك الأنواع معرفة الحديث العالي في الأسناد, وقد ألف العلامة صلاح الدين أبو سعيد خليل بن كيكلدي العلائي هذا الكتاب (بغية الملتمس في سباعيات حديث الإمام مالك بن أنس) في نوع من أنواع العلو, وهو علو الإسناد إلى الإمام مالك رحمه الله تعالى.
وهو كتاب فريد في بابه؛ حيث تكلم فيه على الإسناد وأهميته, وأن هذه الأمة المرحومة اختصَّت به, ثم تكلم على شرف الإسناد وأهميته, وأن هذه الأمة المرحومة اختصت به, ثم تكلم على شرف أصحاب الحديث, ووصيته صلى الله عليه وسلم بهم, ثم تكلم على علو الأسناد, وقسمه إلى خمسة أقسام, ثم ترجم ترجمة حسنة للإمام مالك رحمه الله تعالى, وذكر أنه أول من وضع كتاباً من حديث النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم على الأبواب, ثم ذكر من وقع له حديث الإمام مالك من طرقهم.
