"الحجر والظلال" كتاب في النقد الأدبي يضع أمام القارئ دراسات تكشف بالدرجة الأولى عن نفسها من خلال الكشف عن علاقتها بمؤلفها. هذه العلاقة تتجلى في جوانب عدة، أبرزها ما يتصل منها بالطريقة التي تم فيها اختيار التجارب الإبداعية، ومن ثم مساءلتها نقدياً. وما يتصل منها أيضاً بالرؤية النقدية التي لامست عموم تلك التجارب. إن إختيار الكاتب التجارب أو النصوص للدرس التي لامست عموم تلك التجارب. إن إختيار الكاتب التجارب أو النصوص للدرس للنقدي لم تكن دوافعه كما يقول تبتعد عن الروابط الاجتماعية الثقافية والفكرية، ولا هي أيضاً تبتعد عن الانحياز والحب للتجارب ذاتها. اختيار محكوم بسياق تحولات المؤلف شعرياً وثقافياُ وفكرياً بامتياز التحولات ذاتها سيتلمسها القارئ لهذا الكتاب جلياً في الأسلوب: ومنها، كيفية صياغة الجملة وتركيبتها فنياً، تقديم الخبر أو تأخيره، علاقة الفاعل بالمفعول وموقع كل منهما داخل الجملة، وهكذا. لذلك فإن اتضاح الفكرة أو غموضها قد تتراوح من دراسة إلى أخرى مما يحتويه الكتاب، حسب العناية بالأسلوب والخبرة المترتبة على اكتسابه.
تتأكد أهمية ذلك من وجهة نظر الكاتب من كونها –أي الدراسات- تساعد كثيراً في إيجاد روابط وثيقة بين القارئ والنص والمؤلف، وما بين الروابط والإضاءة تأتي هذه الدراسات والمقالات باعتبارها وثيقة تاريخية، بالقدر الذي تنعكس ذاتية المؤلف وبصمته فيها، وتنعكس أيضاً بجميع ما يتصل بها من سياقات ثقافية واجتماعية عاشها محمد الحرز خلال عقد من الزمن مع هذه النصوص التي وضعها في مختبر القراءة ليحرك من خلالها مخيلتنا وتفكيرنا باتجاه ذلك الفن الراقي، فأجاد وأبدع...
