يرمي هذا الكتاب إلى الإعتراف بجميل الألي قعدوا لعلم العروض، وأفاضوا بعواطفهم، ووثقوا حياة العرب وإسهامهم الحضاري في الإرث الإنساني الذي أنجب تقانه العصر، وشادوا ديوان العرب، وقد سبكوا جملهم، ورصفوا عباراتهم، وصاغوا سلسل مشاعرهم، وعصروا جميل خيالاتهم، وحبكوا طرز صورهم عبر العصور الأدبية المتتالية التي حمل كل منها جديده ولبنته التي أسهمت في ترسيخ الميراث الشعري، وبينت أن لكل عصر معطياته وخصوصياته الثقافية والسياسية والفكرية التي تشكل الرحم الأدبي الذي يتولد فيه الجنس الشعري أو السلالة الأدبية.
وقد استهدف فيه المؤلف عددا من الفئات والشرائح، ومنها: الأكاديميون، والهواة، ومراحل التعليم العام.
وقد اتبع المؤلف في بناء الكتاب استراتيجية علمية مخططة في أجزائه كافة، تتلخص في: عرض المفهوم وتوضيحه بنماذج تقاس عليها ثم وضع مناشط تقويمية، تعزيزية وإثرانية بلغت أربعين منشطا.
وبناء على ذلك أقيم الكتاب على ثلاثة أجزاء، وهي العروض والشعر والقوافي.
فالجزء الأول ضم أربعة فصول، اتخذ العروض محورا رئيسا تسلسل من الشعر الجاهلي إلى تأسيس علم العروض.
أما الجزء الثاني: فقد اعتمد على فصل وحيد هو الفصل الخامس الذي تمحور حول الشعر وأجناسه.
واختتم الكتاب بالجزء الثالث الذي ركز في فصله السادس على القوافي مبينا قيمة الروي في تحديد هوية القصيدة، موضحا موانع الروي وزياداته وصلاحيته ومفاهيمه.
