جاء هذا الكتاب ليلبي حاجة في الواقع التعليمي لدى المتعلمين والراغبين في الوقوف على نظام الشعر العربي وأوزانه وقوافيه وقد تميز بأسلوب سهل ميسر وممتع، كما تميز بالشمولية في تناول وعرض المادة وكذلك بوضعه تفعيلات البحور وما يعتريها في أكثر من جدول، مدعما مادته النظرية بتطبيقات عملية على كل بحر، ويعرض الكتاب بشكل متسلسل أيضا لعلم العروض معرفاً به وذاكراً أهميته ويشرح ضوابط الكتابة العروضية بأسلوب سلس فيتناول التقطيع والتفاعيل وأسماء أجزاء البيت وأسرار البحور وبحور الشعر وتفعيلاتها وألقابها (مفردة ومجموعة) والتغيرات التي تعتري البيت (الزحاف والعلة) والتي تعتري كذلك التفعيلات، ومن أجل التيسير على المتعلم شرح الكتاب كيفية اكتشاف بحور الشعر ذاكراً بعد ذلك وصايا وإرشادات مهمة للتعرف على هذه البحور،وبعد أن انتهى من علم العروض نقل الكتاب قارئه إلى علم القافية، فعرفها،وذكر أهميتها، وعيوبها وغير ذلك. ثم طرق موضوعاً في غاية الأهمية وهو الضرورات الشعرية ، فبين المقبول منها والمستقبح. وتحدث في النهاية عن أمور خاصة بفنون الشعر مثل: المعكوس، والمطرز، والمصفر وغيرها.
