يُعدّ جان لورون دالمبير واحداً من أبرز أعلام عصر التنوير الأوروبي، وركناً أساسياً في إصدار الموسوعة إلى جانب ديدرو، ولا يسع المرء أن يحيط تمام الإحاطة بسيرورة نشوء وتطوّر فلسفة العلم الحديثة ما لم يقف جيداً على سيرة عالم الطبيعيات والرياضيات هذا وتحوّله مع الوقت إلى فيلسوف للوضعية المبكرة، مدِّللاً على عقل موسوعي وتفكير مستقلّ ومسلك مستقيم حتى قال عنه جان قال: "لم يكن ثمة من هو مؤهّل أكثر منه لرسم شجرة موسوعية لمعارفنا وتصنيف معجم عقلاني لعلومنا".
ولمّا كان هذا المفكّر يكاد يكون غائباً عن الجامعات والمكتبات العربية، فقد شاء المؤلِّف أن يقدّم لمحة موجزة إنما وافية عن هذا العالم والمفكّر الفرنسي، وذلك من خلال دراسة أعمال ثلاثة له تشكّل المصادر الأساسية لمساهماته العلمية والفلسفية.
وقد سبق للمؤلِّف، الدكتور عبد القادر بشته، الباحث المعروف في مجال فلسفة العلم، أن نشر دراسات عديدة في هذا المجال، صدر منها عن دار الطليعة ثلاث:
-الأبستمولوجيا: مثال الفيزياء النيوتونية (1995). -العقل العلمي في عصر التنوير (1997).
-الفلسفة والعلم: من كانط ونيوتن إلى الوضعية وحدود المعرفة الإنسانية (2001).
