يهدف هذا الكتاب "المحيط في الترجمة والتعبير"، (A Comprehensive Book in Translation and Composition) إلى وضع نماذج مختلفة في الترجمة والإنشاء بين يدي طلاب الجامعات والثانويات وتزويدهم بالمعلومات والأفكار والآراء الكافية لسد حاجاتهم في الامتحانات وحلقات البحث والأعمال التي يمكن أن تسند إليهم بعد التخرج كالمراسلات وترجمة الوثائق العلمية والقانونية. وتؤهل دراسة كتاب "المحيط" خريجي الجامعات والمعاهد الاختصاصية وغير الاختصاصية وطلاب قسم الترجمة في التعليم المفتوح والجامعات الخاصة المتوقعة ليصبحوا تراجمة محلفين ناجحين لدى دوائر الدولة أو تراجمة يرفدون الثقافة العربية بالعلوم الحديثة. كما يبقى الكتاب مرجعاً بين يديهم لما يحوي من نماذج عديدة مختلفة مترجمة من وإلى الإنكليزية تساعدهم على إنجاز أعمالهم بشكل سليم. ولذلك كان المؤلف حريصاً على ما يلي:
1-أن تكون نماذج المواضيع مختلفة تساعد الطالب أن يعبر عما يجول في خاطره من أفكار في موضوع معين وذلك بشكل واضح وصحيح.
2-أن تعطي المواضيع المختارة، الموضوعة منها والترجمة، الطالب فرصة للتعرف على مضمون النص وكيفية ترجمته إلى لغة عربية صحيحة بعد فهمه فهماً صحيحاً.
3-أن تقدم هذه المواضيع نهجاً عملياً في عملية التعبير يتعرف فيه الطالب على التسلسل المناسب لوضع أفكاره وعواطفه وملاحظاته وآرائه وكيفية تطويرها وتحليلها.
4-أن يزود الكتاب الطالب بالمراجع والمصادر التي تساعده على جمع المعلومات والمادة المطلوبة لكتابة مثل هذه المواضيع. والمصدر الرئيسي الأول لكتابة أي موضوع كان هو ذات الطالب ويشمل هذا المصدر مشاعره وذكرياته ومطالعاته وأفكاره وآرائه. وهذا ما يعرف بالخبرة، أي معرفة ما يدور حولك سمعاً وشماً ولمساً ورؤيا.
5-وأن يزود الكتاب مادة غزيرة من المواضيع يختار فيها المدرس ما يشاء وينهل منها الدارس ما يريد.
6-أن تمتاز الترجمة باستعمال لغة سليمة وواضحة، وأن يمتاز التعبير بلغة جذابة وأسلوب سليم، خال من مشاكل التنقيط والتهجئة التي تشوه المواضيع.
هذا كتاب في الترجمة والتعبير، يتناول مواضيع شتى لمفاهيم حديثة كالعولمة والاستنساخ، الإنترنت، الإيدز، السارز، المعرفة، التعليم، الثقافة والفلسفة والحب. وقد وضع خصيصاً ليزود الطالب الجامعي بذخيرة لغوية وفكرية تساعده على استيعاب نصوص إنكليزية متقدمة من خلال الترجمة.
