إن بناء الإنسان يقع على عاتق المؤسسات التربوية، وتبرز هذه الأهمية من خلال الفترة المنوطة بها في تعهدها للإنسان، فالطفل منذ السادسة من عمره يُعهد به إلى المؤسسات التربوية، حيث يقضي فترة طويلة في ظلها متعاملاً معها، مناهج ومعلمين، وأنظمة وقوانين، وهنا تبدو أهمية القيم والمنهاج الذي يحتويها، فالفترة هامة وكذلك المنهاج والهدف المطلوب هو صياغة وتشكيل الإنسان.
وهذا يؤكد أهمية القيم ونوعها التي نرغب في رسمها ورعايتها ويؤكد دور المربي والمنهاج الذي تحتويه هذه الأنماط؛ وهكذا فإن القيم تحتل مركزاً رئيسياً في تكوين شخصية الفرد ونسقه المعرفي، بل هي التي تحدد الإتجاهات، مثلما تحدد السلوك كله.
يسعى هذا الكتاب إلى دراسة القيم الجمالية في المناهج المدرسية الذي هي في أساسها دراسة ظواهر معينة إجتماعية، فنية، حضارية... إلخ أي أن القيم الجمالية نتاج علاقة الكائن الإجتماعي بالسياق الذي يتنامى فيه، لذلك يقوم المعنيون بالتركيز على القيم الواجب على الفرد في المجتمع أن يكتسبها، لأن القيم موجهات للإنسان في حياته من أجل مواجهة الحياة لكي يصل إلى التمييز بين ما يجب عليه أن يفعله وبين ما لا يجب عليه أن يفعله وبين ما هو صواب وما هو خطأ.
وكما هي ضرورية للفرد لكي يتعامل مع الأشخاص والمواقف فهي أيضاً لازمة للمجتمع لكي لا تتضارب القيم ويكون هناك صراع قيمي إجتماعي يؤدي للتفكك والإنهيار.
