أصبح الإستشعار عند بعد أداة مهمة لتوفير البيانات وتحسين اتخاذ القرارات المتعلقة بالتخطيط والتنمية واستخدام الموارد الطبيعية، ويجري توظيف الإستشعار عن بعد اليوم في العديد من التطبيقات البيئية والعمرانية والزراعية والتعدينية وغير ذلك من التطبيقات، ولهذا السبب شرعت العديد من الجامعات والمعاهد الأكاديمية في إطلاق برامج دراسية التي تتناول الإستشعار عن بعد أو تضمين مقررات تتناوله في البرامج الدراسية القادمة. ويحاول هذا الكتاب أن يسد ثغرة في المكتبة العلمية العربية بتوفير كتاب دراسي ومرجع علمي للدراسين والباحثين المتخصصين في مجال الإستشعار عن بعد. وقد صمم هذا الكتاب ليتناول موضوع الإستشعار عن بعد ذاته وليس من خلال منظور أي من التخصصات أو التطبيقات التي يتم توظيف الإستشعار عن بعد فيها، وقد تناول المؤلف من خلال فصول الكتاب الموضوعات الأساسية في الإستشعار من بعد ابتداء بالمقدمات العلمية مروراً بالمجسات والمنصات المستخدمة في الإستشعار عن بعد انتهاء بأساليب التحليل الرقمي لصور الإستشعار عن بعد وتطبيقاتها المختلفة. كما اتبع المؤلف منهجاً يهدف لتبسيط الموضوعات التي يتناولها فيبدأ بتمهيد الموضوع وبيان موضعه من الإستشعار عن بعد علماً وتقنية وتطبيقاً ثم يناقش الموضوع مبنياً جوانبه العلمية والرياضية ثم يعرض للجوانب الإيجابية والسلبية من الموضوع، وقد زوَد المؤلف الكتاب بالعديد من الأشكال التوضيحية والأمثلة التي تبين المفاهيم المختلفة التي يتناولها الكتاب. كما ألحق كل فصل بتقويم يتضمن بعض الأسئلة أو المسائل لمساعدة القارئ تقييم الفائدة من الفصل. وفي النهاية يمثل هذا الكتاب إضافة قيمة للمكتبة العلمية العربية ودليل موثوق لهؤلاء العاملين في الإستشعار عن بعد والساعين للإستفادة من تطبيقاته.
