الاستشعار عن بعد هو استخدام طرق متعددة للنظر وللدراسة لظواهر أو أهداف معينة من مسافات بعيدة دون الحاجة الى الاقتراب أو التلامس مع هذه الظاهرة أو الأهداف -وتحت ظروف لا يمكن للعين البشرية أن تصل اليها- سواء كان ذلك نهارا أو ليلا وتعتبر حاسة البصر وحاسة السمع وحاسة الشم فى الانسان أحد وسائل الاستشعار عن بعد من مسافات بعيدة باستخدام أجهزة طبيعية تتلقى الموجات الضوئية أو الموجات الصوتية أو بانتقال جزيئات وذرات من مواد كيميائية من مصدرها الى هذه الأجهزة الطبيعية للاستشعار.
وتقوم الأقمار الصناعية وطائرات الاستكشاف التى تحلق على ارتفاعات شاهقة بمراقبة كل بقعة على سطح الأرض وبصفة مستمرة ليلا ونهارا، وتقوم هذه الأقمار الصناعية وطائرات الاستكشاف بما تحمله من أجهزة تصوير عادية أو الكترونية بتسجيل ما تراه فى كل مكان على سطح الكرة الأرضية وترسل ببعض هذه المشاهدات فورا الى مراكز استقبال أرضية لتجميع هذه المشاهد ووضعها فى صور مختلفة لدراستها، واستخلاص المعلومات منه، وذلك طبقا لمتطلبات البحث وهدف الدراسة.
