جاء هذا الكتاب التعليمي ليلبي حاجات المعلمين وأعضاء هيئة التدريس في كليات الآداب والتربية والمعاهد العليا في إعداد المعلمين وخريجي تلك الكليات والمعاهد وتنمية وترسيخ كفاياتهم التدريسية وقد حاولت مؤلفة هذا الكتاب دراسة دور الكفايات في عملية تعليم وتعلم المواد الاجتماعية وأسس استخدامها الصفي وأساليبها. ونود أن نؤكد هنا أن الدراسة النظرية لهذه الكفايات لا يمكن أن نحقق أغراضها دون ممارسات تطبيقية كافية في ميدانها الحقيقي وهو الفصول الدراسية.
وعليه فإن هذا الكتاب يختلف عن تلك الكتبي التي تجمع الدراسات والنظريات والكفايات والمهارات التدريسية بطريقة لا يستطيع معلم المواد الاجتماعية الإفادة منها. ولذلك كل جاء هذا الكتاب، ليسد نقصاً ويعالج قصوراً بيناً في مجال إعداد تأهيل معلمي المواد الاجتماعية. ولأجل إفادة قارئه الفائدة المطلوبة فقد اهتم الفصل الأول من الكتاب بإلقاء الضوء على مفهوم المواد الاجتماعية وأهميتها ووظيفتها التربوية في عملية التربية والتعليم، أما الفصل الثاني من الكتاب فقد ألقى الضوء على أهمية معلم المواد الاجتماعية في عملية التربية والتعليم وأهمية برامج إعداده وتأهيليه. وفي الفصل الثالث عرضت المؤلفة الأفكار والخبرات التي تساعد القارئ في اكتساب وتنمية الكفايات التدريسية اللازمة في تدريس المواد الاجتماعية في وحدتين مصغرتين هما: الوحدة التعليمية المصغرة الأولى: كفاية التخطيط في التدريس، والوحدة التعليمية المصغرة الثانية: كفاية تقويم التعليم والتعلم في تدريس المواد الاجتماعية.
