إن الحديث عن النيل الخالدة، هو استنطاق لماض عريق وتاريخ مجيد للأمة السودانية، فقد "كان النيل وما يزال ملهم الأدباء ووحي الفنانين ومبعث الشعر ومنبع الرزق والخير. فالنيل يجتاز جنوب السودان كما يجتاز وسط السودان وشمال السودان وتأثيره في كل منطقة من هذه المناطق كالضوء في الشمس والعبير في الزهور، ينشر الخصب حوله. فهو في اندفاعه الهادر رمز للحرية والانعتاق من كل قيد ونير، وسراج وهاج يستنار به في طريق الصمود والإصرار نحو تحقيق الغاية والهدف، ورغم الصعاب والعقبات.
فالنيل الخالد سفر وطني مقدس تقرأ في صفحاته عقول الناشئة ماضي أجدادها التليد، وتستلهم من "عمقه" وسكونه ولطفه و"وقاره" القوة والحكمة، وتستمد من فورته وعنفه واندفاع موجه، الصبر ومضاء العزيمة وقوة الشكيمة، لبناء حاضر مشرق نضر ومستقبل زاهر وضاء.
ومن ثم أخذت ألسنة الشعراء ترد منهله كما يتهافت الفراش على الرحيق تعب منه تلك المعاني السامقة، وتنهل من فيضه صور البيان، وتستوحي من ماضيه تاريخ أمتها المشرق. فلم يخل ديوان شاعر سوداني من ذكر النيل، والحديث عنه والتغني به، عرفانا بفضله العميم، وتربية وطنية للناشئة حتى يشبوا على حبه والتعلق به، لأنه رمز لحياة هذه الأمة وماضيها العريق، والحاضر النضير التي تتطلع إليه.
وما يسعى إليه هذا السفر هو تقصي بعض هذه القصائد التي نظمت بالشعر العربي الفصيح الحديث في السودان، وأنفذ من وراء كلماتها وإيحاءات صورها البيانية إلى المعاني التي ترمي إليها، وعلاقة هذه المعاني بالنيل الخالد، وارتباطها به.
وقد حرص أن ينصب الحديث في هذا البحث على النص الشعري مباشرة فكانت النصوص هي لحمة هذه الدراسة وسدتها، وبتحليلها موضوعياً وفنياً.
