التوحّد هو إحدى حالات الإعاقة التي تعوق من استيعاب المخ للمعلومات وكيفية معالجتها وتؤدي إلى حدوث مشاكل لدى الطفل في كيفية الإتصال بمن حوله.
يتطرق هذا الكتاب إلى مختلف النظريات التي بحثت في موضوع التوحد، وخاصة في مرحلة الطفولة، ويقدم العلاج المناسب لمساعدة الطفل والعائلة على تشخيص حالة الطفل من خلال أخصائيين مدربين مع ذكر لحالات تمّ معالجتها.
يعتبر مؤلفا الكتاب أنه من الصعب التعرّف على التوحد، فهو طريقة ما "غير مرئي" مقارنة مع الأطفال الذين يعانون من الشلل الدماغي مثلاً، أو أي عجز جسدي، وغالباً ما يُساء فهم السلوك غير المألوف الصادر عن الطفل، ويُساء تفسيره، فيوصم بكلمات قد تكون رصاصات في البناء النفسي منها: طفل مدلل، شقي، غير مؤدب، عنيف، ويبقى الآباء يعانون من جهد دائم، بسبب لومهم على عدم قدرتهم على ضبط طفلهم، وفي بعض الأحيان، يطلق على التوحد إعاقة خفية، تنم عن سلوكات نابعة من طبيعة آلية الطفل التوحدي، حيث أنها سلوكات غير إرادية، وغير مسيطر عليها، تصدر نتيجة عالمه الخاص – غير المفهوم لمن حوله – ويمكن أن يُقال بأنه سلوك صادم بالنسبة لأولياء الأمور والمحيطين والمتعاملين مع أفراد التوحد.
يتألف الكتاب من بابين، جاء الباب الأول بعنوان (التوحد وجهة نظر الآباء) ويضم سبعة فصول: الأول: تعريفات وتصنيفات، والثاني: التشخيص، والثالث: أسباب التوحد، والرابع: التطور، والخامس: النظريات، والسادس: العلاج، والسابع: طرح لمجموعة من الأفكار. أما الباب الثاني فجاء بعنوان (التوحد: رؤية الأخصائيين) وتضمن نفس الترتيب السابق من حيث العناوين.
وكل هذه الفصول أبرزت، أن نقص المعلومات حول الأشخاص ذوي التوحد ناجم عن قلة الإدراك لسيكولوجية هذه الفئة، وينشأ عن نقص في الخبرات المشتركة والمعتقدات والإتجاهات، وأنه بالإمكان إنجاز فهم متبادل، وتعلم قراءة العقل.
