"الحياة تعني المراقبة" ... هذا هو شعار لوفيج كالتنبورغ، عالم الحيوان النمساوي الكبير، الذي أفنى عمره مع حيواناته في معهده على ضفة نهر الإلبه في دريسدين، قبل رحيله فجأة إلى فيينا بعد بناء جدار برلين عام 1961. لم يعرف هذا العالِم الغريب الأطوار أحدٌ في ألمانيا الشرقية كما عرفه صاحب الرواية "هيرمان فونك"، الذي غادر مسقط رأسه - حي "بوزين"- برفقة والديه يوم كان في الحادية عشرة، بعد أن قابل كالتنبورغ لأول مرة هناك.أصبح الطفل "هيرمان" يتيماً في أول يوم وصلت فيه الأسرة إلى دريزدين، بعد أن دكت قذائف الطائرات المدينة كلها، وظلت تلك الليلة علامة مميزة في حياته: وكان اللقاء العصيب بينه وبين الحيوانات في فبراير عام 1945 عندما رأى الطيور تتساقط محترقة من السماء. ولما كبر تخصص في علم الطيور، حيث تتلمذ على يد أستاذه وأبيه الروحي لودفيج كالتنبورغ. يصور مرسيل باير شخصية الرواية هيرمان فونك في هذه الرواية مراقبا صامتا لحياة عالِم كبير، طالما حاول استكشاف خبايا عالَمي الحيوان من البشر، ولكنه لم يفصح أبداً عن الأعماق الخطيرة في عالمه الخاص. إن علماء وباحثي الحيوان في معهد دريسدن ايضًا – في ظل أحداث الرواية على مسرح الوقائع التارخية في ألمانيا الديمقراطية سابقًا، بما فيها من موت ستالين ومحاكمة براغ عام 1952 وعودة المهاجرين ومعاداة الأجانب - يعلمون أنهم يخضعون لمراقبة مستمرة، مراقبة لا تستهدف سوى كشف سر الإنسان
