من هو كالتنبورغ؟ ربما لا أحد يعرف غير الشاب هيرمان فونك، الذي يسرد للقارئ حكاية كالتنبورغ، في هذه الرواية غادر الرواي مسقط رأسه «بوسين» وهو في الحادية عشر من عمره، حيث سبق له وأن التقى بكالتنبورغ هناك. تركت ليلة قصف مدينة دريسدن وتدميرها أشد أثر على كالتنبورغ وعلى حياته، حيث جعلت منه يتيماً، كان يرى كيف كانت العصافير تتساقط محروقة من السماء عام 1945 في تلك الليلة الجهنمية، لقد رأى في تلك الليلة لأول مرة كيف كانت الحيوانات تعاني وكيف جعلت منه عالِمَ طيور، تلك الليلة التي كان فيها للموت أجنحة يطير فيها بسماء دريسدن. تدور أحداث الرواية في ظل تاريخ ألمانيا الديمقراطية سابقاً، حياة وموت ستالين، المحاكمات الصورية في براغ عام 1952 والهجرة والعداءات الجديدة والرقابة الدائمة، التي تستهدف الإنسان مهما كان وأينما كان. في رواية «كالتنبورغ» يتحف مارسيل باير القارئ بالإشارات الواضحة والخفية على قدر عالٍ من الجمالية اللغوية والأسلوبية، يأخذ القارئ بعيداً في فضاء رؤية الذات والآخر عارضاً له قطعة من التاريخ الألماني بكل تضاريسها، الوعرة منها والأقل وعورة.
