يبحث هذا الكتاب في "علم الآثار" الذي اصطلح الباحثون الأوروبيون على تسميته "أركيولوجيا" ليعبروا بها عن دراسة آثار ماضي الإنسانيّة دراسة علميّة، وقد اتسعت مجالات هذا العلم لتشمل كافة المخلفات الناجمة عن نشاط الإنسان في الماضي، وفي مختلف مناحي حياته الماديّة والمعنويّة، فغدا علم الآثار ذا مدلول شامل لقصة الإنسان كما تعبّر عنها الأشياء التي تخلفت عنه، من أدوات عاديّة ومعدات قتاليّة، أو مباني سكنيّة ومعابد ومقابر، أو بقايا جسميّة لإنسان أو حيوان، كانت له علاقة بحياة الإنسان، أو شواهد فنيّة كالنقوش أو المنحوتات، أو كتابات أثريّة مدونة على مختلف السطوح، من ألواح الطين إلى الواجهات الحجريّة وورق البردي إلى الورق العادي.
هذا وقد قسّم الباحث كتابه إلى أربعة فصول:
-الفصل الأوّل: تاريخ علم الآثار.
-الفصل الثاني: البحث عن الأثار في الجزائر.
-الفصل الثالث: مناهج علم الآثار.
-الفصل الرابع: مفردات علم الآثار (مصطلحات ومفاهيم).
و حرص المؤلّف على إرفاق المعلومات بالصور الملائمة لإيضاح المعنى وإبراز الشواهد، كما أخص الصور والأشكال بتعاليق وتوضيحات ضروريّة.
و قد ختم الكتاب بملحقين يتعلقان بتوصيات منظمة (اليونسكو) حول: حفظ الآثار والمبادئ الدوليّة للحفائر الأثريّة.
