يشكّل الحديث عن "الآثار" موضوعاً متشعّب الإتجاهات والأهداف، منها ما يخضع لمقتضيات المعرفة الواعية، ويتمثّل بإهتمام المتعاطي به بالبحث عن بقايا الماضي أو الإطلاع على مخلّفات الأجيال السالفة أو الإستطلاع عنها، سعياً وراء المعرفة ما غاب من أمورٍ هذا الماضي التي لم يأتِ التاريخ المكتوب على ذكرها، أو رغبةً في توضيح مسائل تاريخيّة عالقة او غامضة أو مجهولة، وذلك من خلال التنقيب، بغضّ النظر عن المنهجيات والوسائل المستخدمة، ومنها ما يرتبط بدوافع فضولٍ لاواعية ناجمة عن إرتباط "الآثار" و"التراث" إرتباطاً وثيقاً بقضايا البحث في الأصول والجذور والهويّة والإنتماء والولاء، وهي قيَمٌ قادرة على التحكم بالعقول والتأثير في الأذهان، نظراً لصعوبة أو إستحالة إخضاعها لمقاييس الكمّ والكيف، فضلاً عن إرتباط الموضوع بِظاهرةٍ أخذت تتعاظم منذ عقود، تتمثّل بما يُمكن تسميه بـ "يقظة الأثرية"، الأمر الذي يُنبئ بحصول تحوّلات ذهنيّة من شأنها تفضيل "التاريخ الذاكريّ" (I'histoire - mémoire) على "التاريخ النقدي" (I'histoire - critique).
إنطلاقاً من هذا الواقع، وضعتُ هذا الكتاب ليكون "مدخلاً" يهدف إلى إعطاء القارئ، وبغضّ النظر عن إختصاصه أو إنشغاله، فكرةً حول المواضيع المرتبطة بــ "الآثار" بجوانبها المختلفة، ليتمكّن من تكوين رأيٍ فيها أو إلقاء نظرية نقديّة عليها او التساؤل حول جدوى نشاطٍ يَشغَلُ حيزاً لا بأس به من إهتمامات الناس، فخصّصت الجزء الأول منه للبحث في مفاهيم هذا المذهب (discipline) ومفرداته وأبعاده وإرتباطاته العضوي بالتاريخ، ومناقشة مسألة الموضوعيّة (objectivité) والذاتانيّة (subjectivité) والوسائل التي اعتمدّتها الأرخيولوجيا للخروج من موقفها الحرج بين العلوم الإنسانيّة (sciences humaines) من جهة والعلوم المضبوطة أو الصحيحة (sciences exactes ou dures) من جهة أخرى.
فضلاً عن إستعراض مراحل التطوّر التي مرّ بها الإهتمام بالعاديّات (antiquités)، منذ ان بدأ الإنسان يبحثُ عنها وفيها ويجمعها ويُصنفها ويدرسُها بهدف الوصول إلى تحديد خصوصيّات الثقافات والحضارات التي أنتجَتها، أما الجزء الثاني، فسيركز على إستعراض أساليب التنقيب الأرخيولوجي وتحليل نتائجه وتسخير مقدّرات العلوم والتقنيات والتكنولوجيّات الحديثة في معالجة المكتشفات بهدف مقاربة "الحدث الإنساني" (le fait humain) بشكل أكثر موضوعيّة.
