إنصب اهتمامنا حتى الأن على الطريقة التي فُهم بها العقل في القرآن.
وقد أتخذ رأي القرآن في معنى العقل لاحقاً نقطة إنطلاق نحو نقاش أعمق بين علماء الدين والفلاسفة المسلمين.
كان الجانب الأول في هذا النقاش قبول كل العناصر الأساسية في العقيدة دون سؤال من جهة، والسماح بقدر معين من التعقل المستقل في الأمور المتعلقة بالفقه الإسلامي من جهة أخرى.
ولكن العلاقة بين العقلاني واللاعقلاني بقدر تعلق الأمر بالقرآن تحددت بصيغة ضدّيات من قبيل الهداية والضلال او التوحيد والشرك. هنالك تحديد متبادل في الخطاب القرآني بين العقلاني أي التوحيد، واللاعقلاني أي الشرك.
كان الأول يسعى باستمرار إلى تفنيد الأخير وإخضاعه لميدانه الخاص. لقد توسعت العقلانية من خلال اللاعقلانية. وفي ضوء هذا الصراع يبدو التاريخ وكأنه تعاقب متواتر من الهداية والضلال كما يظهر لدى شعوب مختلفة في حقب مختلفة. يقول القرآن أن التاريخ قد توفر مع محمد خاتم الأنبياء على بداية جديدة يتوجب فيها تصحيح كافة الديانات السابقة على وفق تعاليم دين إبراهيم.
وبهذا يكون التاريخ الحقيقي هو هذه العودة الحرة أو الإجبارية أحياناً إلى ديانة إبراهيم التوحيدية الأولى.
تعد العقلانية التي يقدمها القرآن نتاجاً لنقاش طويل ومتعدد الأبعاد مع الأديان السابقة مثل اليهودية والمسيحية، وكذلك مع عقائد تعود للعرب أنفسهم الذين انحرفوا عن تعاليم إبراهيم الحقة وطرحوا أسئلة الشك في وحدانية الله.
وهي تعتمد تعقلاً مناسباً يميل إلى هزيمة الطرق المتنوعة التي تعبر بها اللاعقلانية عن نفسها.
يظهر القرآن في الواقع احتكاماً قوياً إلى المعرفة، بدلاً من المحبة على سبيل المثال، من أجل فهم الله. وفي نطاق هذه المعرفة يلعب العقل بالطبع «الدور الإيجابي المتمثل بهداية الإنسان إلى المقدس» وتتحقق معرفة الله في نهاية المطاف باستثارة جدالات معينة مستمدة، كما رأينا أعلاه، إما من الطبيعة والتجربة الإنسانية أو مما يقع ما وراء الطبيعة.
