يتضمن هذا الكتاب ترجمة لدراسة قام بها "كامل شياع" ونال عليها شهامة الماجستير بالفلسفة من معهد هرغر في بلجيكا جاءت بعنوان (اليوتوبيا معياراً نقدياً" نقلها إلى العربية "سهيل نجم". يعتبر مؤلف الكتاب أن اليوتوبيا لا تتطلب خضوعاً للعقل أو مطابقة للمعايير وفق نظام ثابت. بل أنها تخرج عن الشروط الموجودة، يناء على تناقضات تلك الشروط وخياراتها المحيرة، من أجل نفيها، إنها تروم الوصول إلى حالة تكون فيها كل الصراعات واللاتوافقات قد أزيلت. لذلك فإن اليوتوبيا متأصلة في هذه العملية المزدوجة للإرتداء المدروس من شروط اجتماعية غير مرغوب فيها والعودة إليها برؤية إليها برؤية منسجمة إذ ليس ثمة يوتوبيا موثقة من دون رؤية معينة عن الإنسجام الاجتماعي.
لأجل ذلك فإن الدراسة التي قام بها "شياع" ستركز على فحص السياق الذي قامت فيه اليوتوبيا بدورها في مراحل تاريخية مختلفة (منذ عصر النهضة حتى وقتنا الراهن) من أجل عرض الفكر اليوتوبي وفرضياته الضمنية، وبالأخص اليوتوبيات الاجتماعية التي هي تحديداً تلك اليوتوبيات التي تصف المجتمعات المتخيلة كما جاءت في هذه الدراسة.
وعليه جاء الفصل الأول مقاربة غير نهائية للصلة الانثربولوجية والفكرية الوثيقة باليوتوبيا. بينما يتطرق الفصل الثاني إلى مناقشة مفهومية لمميزات اليوتوبيا بوصفها معياراً نقدياً، أما الفصل الثالث فبحث في نظرية (بلوخ) عن أصل اليوتوبيا.
