في مستهل هذا الكتاب المخصص لاستخلاص آراء ابن الجوزي في التصوف، لا بد من لمحة نوجز فيها تعريف التصوف وشرطه وعلاقته بالفقه نتبعها بآراء ابن الجوزي في التصوف السني. وسأنحو في ذلك منحيين: الأول: استعراض من ترجم لهم ابن الجوزي واستحسن سيرتهم من الصوفية، والمنحى الثاني: استعراض مختارات معينة من نقده لبعض أعلام التصوف. وسأركز على نقد ابن الجوزي لسهل بن عبد الله التستري المتوفي سنة 283هـ/896م، وأبي طالب المكي المتوفي سنة 386هـ/996م، وعبد الكريم القشيري المتوفي سنة 465هـ/1072م، وأبي حامد الغزالي المتوفي سنة 505هـ/1111م. وهؤلاء الأربعة هم الأربعة هم أكثر الصوفية تعرضاً لنقد ابن الجوزي. وقد يكون هناك أعلام صوفيون هم دعامات أساسية للفكر الصوفي مثل الحلاج (310هـ/922م) والسهروردي الإشراقي (583هـ/1187م) وهذا الأخير كان معاصراً لابن الجوزي. إلا أنه لم يأت على ذكرهما إلا بكلام عابر.
