يضمّ هذا الكتاب قراءات في روايات لخمسة روائيّين عرب، وهم حنّا مينة من سورية، وعبد الرحمن منيف من المملكة العربيّة السعوديّة، وعبد الرحمن مجيد الربيعيّ من العراق، وإلياس خوري من لبنان، وأخيراً إدوار الخرّاط من مصر.
ولقد اتبع المؤلف منهجاً يهدف إلى النقد بأسلوب روائيّ، ويحرص على أن يجعل من النصّ النقديّ نصّاً إبداعيّاً يضيء النصّ الروائيّ من جهة مستعيناً بأدوات النقد كافّة سواء منها التقليديّة أو الحديثة، بالإضافة إلى النفحة الذاتيّة للناقد بإعتباره قارئاً متقليّاً أولاً وقبل كلّ شيء، وبشكل يجعل النقد موضوعيّاً أيضاً ينظر بعين الحبّ والإحترام سواء إلى النصّ أو لصاحبه حتّى عندما يتحدّث عن الثغرات والهنات.
هذا من جهة، ومن جهة أخرى لأنّ الدراسات الخمس تسعى للإحاطة إلى حدّ كبير، حتّى تاريخ كتابتها، بكلّ ما صدر للكاتب ولكلّ ما كتب عنه، فتتحدّث الدراسة عن كلّ عمل على حدة مع الإشارة إلى العلاقة بين عمل وآخر إن وُجدت، ومن ثمّ تستخلص السمات العامّة لأسلوب الروائيّ في صورة شهادات ختاميّة.
