يمثل دفاعًا عن عقيدة السلف، فهو عبارة عن مجلسين من مجالس ابن الجوزي خصَّصهما ليردّ فيهما على سؤالين مهمّين من مسائل العقيدة:
أحدهما: عن الصفات الإلهية. فيجيب ابن الجوزي عن هذا السؤال ناقدًا المجسمة والمشبهة، مبينًا رأيه في المسألة، ومبينًا مذهب السلف من وجهة نظره.
الثاني: عن قضية موقف الصحابة من التأويل، ويرى أنهم – أي الصحابة – لم يشتغلوا بالتأويل لعدم الحاجة إليه.
وقد فنّد رحمه الله حجج المخالفين بالمنقول والمعقول؛ مما تمس الحاجة إلى الاطلاع على ما فيه من ردود وحجج وبراهين مؤيدة لمذهل السلف.
