ولكن يظل علم العسكرية مختلفاً عن العلوم الفيزيائية بأشكال هامة، وعلى الأخص في حالة عدم إمكانية إجراء التجربة المحكمة والقابلة لإعادة إنتاجها كوسيلة للتحقق من صحة النظرية.
لهذا وغيره من الأسباب، فإن المجال الأنسب للأسس المفاهيمية لهذا العلم يقع في العلوم الإجتماعية، قد يكون هذا الإستنتاج بديهياً لمعظم المهنيين العسكريين، إلا أنه يتم التغاضي بشكل متزايد عن آثاره العملية ما يعكس عِرقاً مستمراً ومتعمقاً من "العلموية" في الأساس الفكري للنهج الأمريكي في النظرية والعقيدة والتخطيط العسكريين.
