لا يرمي هذا الكتاب إلى قراءة فكر ترتوليانوس انطلاقا من دافع هووي يدرج كتاباته ضمن مشروع استعادة التراث. أراد ترتوليانوس لكتاباته أن تتعدى الحدود الجغرافية الضيقة لقرطاج، خاصّة وأنه ينتمي إلى مرحلة تأسيسية جعلت منه مؤسسا للاهوت المسيحي، ومدافعا عنه انطلاقا من وضعية قانونية. نروم في هذا العمل التخلّص من ذلك الحكم التصنيفي الصارم الذي يرفض ترتوليانوس بحجة الدفاع عن المؤسسة الدينية. كما نروم إعادة التفكير في مضامين فكره بغض النظر عن إملاءات المؤسسة الدينية وفي صلب مشكل ظلّ قائما إلى اليوم: المنقلب الهرمنوطيقي. إنّ مناقشة المنقلب الهرمنوطيقي القديم لحظة حاسمة في فهم منزلة الفلسفة من اللاهوت ومنزلة اللاهوت من الفلسفة. وربما أراد ترتوليانوس إعفاءنا من مغبة الوقوع في الوصل التلفيقي بينهما، وصلا لم يعد في مقدورنا التحرّر منه إلا انطلاقا من العودة إلى وضعيته القديمة. يظلّ مشكل الحدود بين الفلسفة واللاهوت، بين العقل والإيمان، بين الغنوص والدوغما، بين الإرث العبراني والإرث اليوناني، وبين الإرث اليوناني والإرث المسيحي، قائما إلى اليوم على الرغم من المحاذير التي وضعها ترتوليانوس.
