إن فنّ التأويل ليس في مقدوره أن يبلغ يقينيات مطلقة شبيهة بتلك التي يختص بها العلم الرياضي. زد على ذلك أنّ الفينومينولوجيا التأويلية أدارت ظهرها للحلم الهوسرلي الكبير لرفع الفلسفة إلى رتبة العلم المحكم إحكاماً قطعيّاً.
ولا يعني هذا بداهةً أن لنا الحق في المصادقة على استعمال منفلت من كل عقال لكلمة «هرمينوطيقا»، غير متلائم مع مراس الفكر المحكم، أو في التسليم بأنّ الهرمينوطيقا تتغذى حصراً على «يقينيات سلبية» (ماريون). إنّ الأمر يتعلّق فحسب بالتساؤل عن المعنى الذي يجوز للهرمينوطيقا أن تسبغه على حديث ميشال فوكو الذي جاء فيه «أنّ الضرب الأوحد من الفضول الذي يستحقّ عناء المزاولة بشيء من الشغف ليس ذلك الذي يسعى وراء التشبه، وإنما هو ذلك الذي يتمثل فيما ينزع عن نفسه من اليقينيات».
