دأب العرب في العصر الحديث على إهمال ما لديهم دون تمييز، والتطلع إلى ما لدى الغرب، كيفما كان. من ذلك أن أدباء العرب المعاصرين تخلوا عن فن أدبي جميل كان يمارسه الأجداد بكثرة، وهو أدب المستطرفات. كان الكتاب من أجدادنا يتلقفون القول الطريف في الأفواه، والحدث الطريف من الواقع، ويسجلونهما، غايتهم في هذا العمل لم تكن تنحصر في المتعة العابرة، بل تتجاوزهما إلى العبرة والدقة، وإلى هذا رمى "بو علي ياسين" من كتابه هذه، وفي هذا الإطار جاءت مادة هذا الكتاب الذي يمكن تصنيفه ضمن قائمة كتب المستطرفات والمؤلف لا يتقصد من الطرف التي حملها إلى القارئ إضحاكه بقدر تركيزه على حجم المفارقات في حياتنا. فمن هذه المفارقات ما هو طريق ومضحك، ومنها ما هو غريب ومذهل أو قبيح مغضب. أكثر هذه المفارقات أخذه المؤلف عن مصادر عربية مكتوبة، والأقل ما أخذه مشافهة أما الذي يقدمه في هذا الكتاب أكثر من بعض الابتسامات؟ الكتاب يقدم متعة للقارئ تذكره بأن ما زال في سماء هذه الحياة التي تزخر بغيوم الهموم متسع لضوء شمسات تشيع في النفس الانشراح كالتي تشيعها في الكون ضوء شمسات شباطية.
