أهمية هذا الموضوع تكمن في أنه سعي للوصول إلى رؤيا واضحة بالنسبة لتجربة من التجارب الدينية الإنسانية التي تستحق الدراسة، ألا وهي الظاهرة الروحية. في محاولة للبحث عن أصل المعتقدات الدينية الهادفة في الأساس إلى توحيد الخالق عز وجل. وسأحاول من خلال هذه الدراسة التوصل إلى إلقاء نظرة متكاملة حول الرهبنة المسيحية والتصوف الإسلامي، في محاولة لإيجاد كل عناصر التشابه والتباين والتقارب بين ديانتين كبيرتين على مستوى الظاهرة الروحية، وذلك في سعي جاد لإيجاد أرضية صلبة للحوار المسيحي الإسلامي باعتبار أن التصوف المسيحي والإسلامي يستقيان في الأصل من معين واحد: هو الوحي الإلهي. وهي الإشكالية التي سأحاول توضيحها من خلال التعريف بالرهبنة المسيحية وكل ما يتعلق بها من ظروف النشأة والتطور والأسس والممارسات، ثم توضيح ما يتعلق بالتصوف الإسلامي من تعريف ونشأة وتطور، وكذا أسسه وأشكاله، لأخلص إلى جرد لأهم مظاهر التشابه والتباين والتأثير والتأثر.
