يتناول هذا الكتاب تاريخ النسك المسيحي والتصوف الإسلامي، وبالتالي يبحث في تاريخ الفكر، الذي ينتقل بين الشعوب عبر الطقوس، خصوصاً وأن أثر الذين حاضر في حياة البشر أجمعين.
وهو يجيب عن سؤال: لماذا الرهبانية وليس التصوف في المسيحية، ويدرس أشهر متصوفي المسيحية أمثال: برديصان وأوريجانس وأفلوطين ويحيى النحوي، ويخصص الكتاب فصلاً كاملاً لدراسة ابن العبري الفيلسوف والراهب المتصوف.
ثم يجيب الباحث عن سؤال آخر هو لماذا التصوف وليس الرهبنة في الإسلام، ويعرض لأهم المتصوفة المسلمين أمثال الحسن البصري ورابعة العدوية والحلاج والسهروردي والشيخ الأكبر محي الدين ابن عربي.
ثم يبحث في علاقة اليزيدية في الصوفية وفي تحول اليزيدية من مذهب صوفي إلى دين جديد. ويلقي الضوء من زوايا مختلفة على حياة ودور عدي بن مسافر.
ويقدم الباحث دراسة مفصلة عن الغزالي الفيلسوف المتصوف، ويقوم بمقارنة بين ابن رشد والغزالي وبين يحيى النحوي والغزالي ليصل إلى تقديم مذهب الغزالي في التصوف.
