هذا الكتاب يعالج موضوع الرهبانية من جوانبه المتعددة. تحدث فيه المؤلف عن تعريف الرهبانية والديرية، وعن أصل وبداية النظم النسكية في الديانات الهندية (البراهمانية- البوذية- والجينية) وأسبابها، ثم يبين المؤلف بعض الظواهر النسكية في الديانة المصرية القديمة، وعند بعض الجماعات اليهودية، وفي الفلسفة الأفلاطونية الحديثة، ويركز هذا الكتاب على هذا الموضوع في الديانة المسيحية، مبيناً أصل إطلاق لقب (مسيحية) ومن هو مؤسس المسيحية الحقيقي، كما تحدث المؤلف عن نشأة الرهبانية المسيحية، ومظاهرها (التوحدي، الديري) وأسبابها، ومؤسسيها، وكيف أن المسيحيين تأثروا فيها بالنظم النسكية الأخرى، ويؤكد المؤلف على أنه لا رهبانية في الإسلام، حيث إن الإسلام دين عمل، وعبادة، دين وسطية الإعتدال، ودين توازن بين المادة والروح دون إفراط أو تفريط. وكفى بربك هادياً ونصيراً.
