جمعت التقارير كلها في كيس، ربطت عنقه ورمته في علبة القمامة، أحست بعد أن تخلصت منه أنها غدت خفيفة وبعيدة عن كل شيء، وخارج كل شيء، حتى ثقل جسدها تحررت منه، أتراها تدخل عالم النوم، لأنها أجفلت فجأة، وفتحت عينيها مذعورة وقلبها يخفق بشدة وقد جسّد لها ذهنها لوحة بدت مفزعة، مع أنها مؤلفة من كل الوجوه المحبة والمألوفة، صورتها ترجع من شهر العسل وعيونهم مبحلقة فيها، عيونهم جميعاً، أهلها، أهله، الجيران، المعارف، البقال، والفران، وعامل التنظيفات، عيون تسأل: ماذا تخبئين لنا؟ وترد بابتسامة عذبة: لم أفهم، ماذا أخبئ لكم؟
فيشيرون بأصبعهم إلى بطنها، ويقولون: ماذا تخبئين في بطنك؟
وتطرق بخجل: لكن لم يمضِ على زواجي سوى شهر.
كابوس، كابوس، فعلي، قامت تشرب الماء، وأنفاسها تتلاحق، فكرت أنها لو أرادت الكتابة للطبيب الأميركي عن ظروفها البيئية والنفسية فستبدأ من هذا الكابوس، تحديداً من عبارة: ماذا تخبئين في بطنك...".
