تعتبر التربية الخاصة، تربية مقصورة نحو تربية وإعداد وتنشئة وتوفير فرص أفضل للحياة للأفراد غير العاديين أو غير الأسوياء كي يكونوا أفراداً معتمدين على أنفسهم في المجتمع قادرين على الإنتاج والإندماج داخل مؤسسات المجتمع.
ويختلف الأفراد غير العاديين عن الأفراد العاديين أو الأسوياء من حيث السمات العامة للشخصية والقدرات والمهارات، وهو ما أوضحه هذا الكتاب.
وقد جاء الكتاب في سبعة فصول، تضمن الفصل الأول التعريف بالتربية الخاصة، والطفل غير العادي، وفلسفة التربية الخاصة، والتنظيم الهرمي للتربية الخاصة، وقضايا ومشكلات التربية الخاصة والعوامل المؤدية إلى الإصابات الجسمية والوظيفية، في حين كان الفصل الثاني عن الإعاقة السمعية، وطرق قياس السمع والخصائص السيكلوجية للإعاقة السمعية، في حين كان الفصل الثالث بعنوان الإعاقة البصرية ويشتمل على تعريف الإعاقة البصرية، وأسبابها، والوظائف المعرفية في ظل الإعاقة البصرية.
أما الفصل الرابع فقد تناول إضطرابات التواصل، ويشتمل على تعريف إضطرابات التواصل ومظاهره وأسباب إضطرابات التواصل، وخصائص ذوي إضطرابات التواصل وطرق علاج إضطرابات التواصل، وقد تناول الفصل الخامس التوحد وتعريفه، وسمات الطفل التوحدي، وبعض الإضطرابات المرتبطة بالتوحد، والعوامل المسببة للتوحد.
أما الفصل السادس فقد تناول صعوبات التعلم وتعريفها وأساليب التعرف عليها بالإضافة إلى المتفوقين عقلياً ذوي صعوبات التعلم وتعريفها وأساليب التعرف عليها بالإضافة إلى المتفوقين عقلياً ذوي صعوبات التعلم، بينما جاء الفصل السابع والأخير بعنوان الموهبة والتفوق واشتمل على مفهوم التفوق وبعض المفاهيم المرتبطة به، ومفهوم الذكاء والإبتكار والموهبة.
