لئن صح أن ما كتب عن أبي العلاء من الأبحاث حتى الآن يعد بالمئات، فإنه لصحيح أيضا أن هذه الأبحاث لم تستنفده. ولم يكن ذلك لتقصير من الباحثين في الاستقصاء، ولا لغفلة منهم عن أغراض أبي العلاء، بل لأن أدب هذا الشاعر بعيد الأغوار، واسع الآفاق، وأنه قد آثر في التعبير عن آرائه الإجمال والتلميح، على التفصيل والتصريح.
والبحث الذي نحن بصدده واحد من هذه المئات من الأبحاث، لكنه ربما فارقها في إنه يستشف آراء أبي العلاء من خلال شعره الفلسفي، وفي أنه لا يكتفي بظاهر الدلالات، ولا يتحمل بعيد المعاني، بل يتطلبها بشىء من الاجتهاد، وبجانب من اليسر، وذلك خشية أن يضيع على القارئ بعض أهداف الشاعر، أو يحمل عل الشاعر، واستغلق من أغراضه، أن نعتمد ما كان أقرب مأخذاً وايسر محملاً.
ولما كان أبو العلاء شاعراً نسيج وحده، وكان قمة شامخة مستقلة من قمم الأدب العربي، فقد عمدت الهيئات الجامعية إلى عقد حلقات دراسية خاصة حول أدبه، ولما كنا وما نزال نعاني دراسته وتدريسه في حلقات الاختصاص، رأينا أن نصدر هذا البحث في كتاب مستقل يجتزئ به مريد وأبي العلاء عن اقتناء المؤلفات الجامعة نظير كتابنا "أعلام الفلسفة العربية".
وليس المقصود من عرض هذه الصورة لعالم أبي العلاء أن نؤرخ لعصره، بل إن ننظر إلى مجتمعه بالمنظار الأسود الذي رآه هو به، فنستحلى بذلك مزاج الشاعر، ونلم بطابعه الفكري الخاص. وجل ما نرجو أن يكون هذا الموجز مما يقرب على القارئ أغوار أبي العلاء السحيقة ويدني إليه آفاقه البعيدة.
