Toute sa vie, Aboul ‘Alâ’ Al-Ma‘arri (973-1057) joua avec une pistache ; il la tournait et retournait entre ses doigts, se demandant si elle contenait une graine ou pas. Le doute où il passa maître revient en fin de compte à l’indécision qui obsède celui qui est prêt à casser sa pistache : il ignore si elle est pleine ou vide. Il a dans la main une pistache, et ce qui l’angoisse est qu’il ne sait pas comment elle lui est arrivée, et à qui il la doit. En tout cas elle est son lot, pleine ou vide. Il ne peut la refuser, car alors à qui la rendre ? Al-Ma‘arri passa sa vie à refuser les cadeaux et les faveurs, mais était impuissant à écarter la pistache qui lui était un jour tombée dans la main.
