حمل العرب مشمل الفكر الإنساني ستة قرون، كانت أوربا في غضونها غارقة في ظلمة الجهل. بدأوا في أن أحيوا الفكر اليوناني، ثم عالجوه بالشرح والتعليق. حتى إذا نضجوا أخذوا في التأليف والوضع، مستأنفين السير بالعلوم من حيث أوصلها اليونان، إلى حيث تيسر لهم أن أوصلوها. واشتغلوا بمواضيع جديدة، اختبروا حقائقها، ووضعوا أصولها، واستنبطوا لها القواعد، واستخرجوا منها النواميس، وهيأوا لها المصطلحات والتعابير.
ثم أتاحوا هذا التراث الفكري، لشعب فتي كان يهم بالنهوض، هو الشعب اللاتيني. ضمن هذا الإطار يأتي كتاب "معالم الفكر العربي في العصر الوسيط"، وقد رسم له المؤلف أن يحيي بحثه هذا كلما بمجاري الفكر، وافياً بأصول المواضيع، مجملاً بأسلوب الأداء، بحيث يجد فيه القارئ المستجد صورة مجملة واضحة لنتاج العرب الفكري، ويلقي فيه الباحث المطلع خلاصة حسنة لمناصي الفكر العربي، ولئن رأى المؤلف في تأليفه حاجة طالب الفلسفة بما يقرب من المنهج الرسمي المقرر في المدارس فإنه جعل همه الأول أن يفي الموضوع حقه، فأضاف إلى المنهج الرسمي ما شعر أن الموضوع يقتضيه، موجزاً ما طال بلا مبرر، ومنسقاً المادة على نحو يجمع بين السياق الموضوعي والتسلسل التاريخي: وقد تعمد المؤلف وزيادة في الفائدة إلى إلحاق كل من الفصول ببيان يثبت فيه بعض المراجع الحديثة الموثوقة والتي يسهل الوصول إليها، بالإضافة إلى ذلك اتبع المؤلف بيان المراجع، في الأبحاث الفلسفية خاصة، بالإشارة إلى فصول من النصوص القديمة التي كان قد اختارها وشرحها وجمعها في كتاب مستقل سماه "نصوص فلسفية ميسرة". وقد جاء الكتاب موجزاً في أبحاثه، مسهباً باعتبار مراجعه محكماً بداعي اتزانه في توأمه "نصوص فلسفية ميسرة" بنصوص مشروحة، ترفد مادته وتضبط معانيه ومدلولاته.
